Deceased Name: Dr. Robert Simon

Dr. Robert Simon, a retired dentist, died Sunday (June 27, 2004) at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur of complications from injuries he suffered in a fall from a bicycle. He was 77 and a resident of Clayton.

Dr. Simon was born in St. Louis. He served in World War II with the Army cavalry in Germany.

After his military service, Dr. Simon enrolled at Washington University, where he earned his dental degree in 1953. Dr. Simon served his internship at Jewish Hospital (now Barnes-Jewish Hospital), where he led the hospital's dental clinic from 1956 to 1960. Dr. Simon served on the faculty of the Washington University School of Dentistry until 2000.

Dr. Simon operated his private practice in Clayton from 1958 until he retired in 2001.

In March, the Missouri House of Representatives and Senate honored Dr. Simon for his contributions to dentistry. He was president of the local chapter of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity. He worked as a volunteer and served on the board of directors at Grace Hill Neighborhood Centers Inc.

Dr. Simon was past president of the St. Louis Hillel at Washington University. He was active in the Jewish Foundation of St. Louis and B'nai Amoona Congregation.

He was an avid bicyclist. At the time of his death, he was preparing for his 13th 500-mile ride across Iowa.

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. today at Congregation B'nai Amoona, 324 South Mason Road in Creve Coeur with a funeral service to follow at 2:30 p.m. at the temple. Interment will be in Beth Hamesrosh Hagodol Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Carole "Cookie" Simon; three sons, Michael Simon of Mexico City, David Simon of St. Louis and Jonathan Simon of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Beverly Kaufer of University City; and one grandchild.
